Posted by 呷飽沒 in Formosa Politics on April 30th, 2009
Call for Action: Boycott companies that advertise on Taiwan propaganda media outlets
Posted by 呷飽沒 in Formosa Politics on April 30th, 2009
Problem
Taiwan’s mainstream media companies are owned and operated by those with close ties to the KMT, thus turning what should be news reporting and honest journalistic investigation into a KMT propoganda machine.
Proposal
The mainstream media companies, television, newspaper, and radio are for the most part not government owned but for-profit enterprises that rely on advertising revenue. This dependency is an opening. By executing a boycott against the companies that advertise on these media outlets it taps into the heart of what is important for both the advertisers and for the media companies, profit. Once companies feel the pinch, especially in the current challenging economic climate, they will begin to pull away from advertising on the KMT supporting media or put pressure on those media outlets to change. As those media outlets start to lose advertising, they will have to decide to either continue to show the KMT propaganda and lose money, or begin to show balanced news and stay in business.
Action Steps
How to effectively run this boycott and change the face of Taiwan’s media and news reporting.
- Assign Commercial Monitors: Set up a monitor for each targeted radio show, TV show, or newspaper. For example, one or two daily monitors for CTS News whose sole assignment is to note advertisers for these shows.
- Identify Prime Advertisers: Get the name of advertisers that appear on a given show. Post a list of these advertisers on a high visibility web site. If you see a particular insurance company advertising on a targeted show, note the company, post it to the list of boycotted companies. If the same company has more than one commercial on the same show, target that company over any other.
- Call and Write to Advertiser: Call and write to sponsors of the show to make sure they are aware of a possible boycott, allow them a chance to pull ads from a targeted show. Make sure to explain the reason for your concern, cite evidence.
- Post List: Use friendly radio stations, cable news shows and discussions, and the internet to promote the web site which points out offending advertisers. By using these outlets, bringing traffic to such a blacklist site could be easier than you think.
- Do not end boycott until goal is met: For example, until a public apology is offered by the host or the network president resigns, or feels the full wrath of stockholder pressure, and change are actually made to news reporting. Stay updated on list of advertisers. Participate. And don’t buy from those who spit in your face, and your children’s.
- Support companies who advertise on show’s supporting Taiwanese culture, democracy, and self-determination: Be aware of companies that do advertise on shows supporting the right things and put your buying power towards them.
Letter to Representative Reichert to Co-Sponsor HCR 18 supporting democratic Taiwan

The Honorable Dave Reichert
House of Representatives
1730 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515-4708
Re: Co-Sponsor HCR 18. Support democratic Taiwan.
Dear Representative Reichert:
On January 9, 2009, Rep. John Linder introduced House Concurrent Resolution 18 (H.Con.Res.18) calling for United States diplomatic recognition of Taiwan.
It’s time to right a wrong that the US allowed after WWII, the use of Taiwan as a pawn in the game against Communist China and Russia. The US allowed the defeated Chinese Nationalist regime to flee to Taiwan and establish a dictatorship of minority Chinese over the majority local Taiwanese. The US government, especially the US State Department, continues to perpetuate this wrong; discouraging a now democracy from the very thing that we in the US desired, self-determination.
The US government pushed the first local Taiwanese president to not allow a democratic vote on self-determination, and over what? US political and economic expediency; yes our own US State Department is being dictated to by Beijing. Now with US support the Chinese Nationalist are quickly eroding human rights in Taiwan and pushing closer to China. How does this help the US? Showing Beijing that democracy and ideals are for sale? Bowing to the saber-rattling of a self-important and insecure China dictatorship?
It is very important that the US supports and defends the rights of local Taiwanese to self-determination. It is also important that the US stops being silent in the face of the continues lies of China that Taiwan is part of China. In fact Taiwan was a part of the Japanese empire until the end of WWII, when it fell to US Military jurisdiction as all Japanese lands did (Guam, Saipan, Philippines, etc). Prior to this, the Dutch, Spanish, English and many other countries had outposts or controlled parts of Taiwan, the Dutch being first in 1624. In the San Francisco Peace Treaty of April 1952, Japan renounced all right, title, and claim to Formosa and the Pescadores. However, no receiving country was named for this territorial cession. The Republic of China was entrusted with authority over Formosa and the Pescadores based on the specifications of General Order No. 1 of Sept. 2, 1945, issued by General Douglas MacArthur. The Republic of China became a government-in-exile when it moved its central government to occupied Taiwan in mid-December 1949. Any historical documents prior to Japan’s control of Taiwan indicate the Manchus (northern foreigners who conquered China and ruled as the Qing dynasty) controlled only an small section of Taiwan for less than six years as a colony; similar to how several European countries controlled small sections of China as colonies, so shall we say China split from England? Neither therefore could Taiwan have split from the mainland as China keeps repeating.
We must support the right of democratic self-determination. I therefore strongly urge you to co-sponsor HCR 18.
Thank you very much for your support for Taiwan!
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
